Free gas surprises drivers

Berkeley (KSDK)-  A surprise gas giveaway in Berkeley gave drivers a big break this holiday weekend.

Former NBA Player and St. Louis native Larry Hughes and member of his foundation pumped free gas for the first 150 cars that pulled into the Quik Trip on North Hanley from 4:30 to 5:30pm Sunday afternoon.

Hughes also organized a gas giveaway earlier in the day at the Mobil Mart on Delmar in St. Louis.

Gas drives creative ways to draw tourists

OCEAN CITY — Joe Kro-Art wants prospective Ocean City visitors to imagine pumping gasoline into their vehicles on their way to or from vacation. Many may cringe at the thought. But Kro-Art wants to add a twist: The gas going into the tank is free.

The owner of Ocean Gallery — a vibrantly decorated art outlet on Second Street and the Boardwalk — has been vocal about the tourism benefits of offering free gas incentives to resort patrons. He fears visitors this summer could be discouraged by rising gas prices.

They may be short on funds after buying enough gas to get to the resort, he says, or they may worry about how much they need to save to make it home. Worst-case scenario: They won’t even come at all. Regulars to the area may scale back the number of trips they make during the three month season, as well.

“We need to get the idea in their head that gas is gold, and you can get free gas in Ocean City,” Kro-Art said.

In recent weeks, Kro-Art has put out feelers to town officials and business owners. Among them is a half-baked proposal that the town purchase a gas station to provide free fuel. Kro-Art admits the idea may be an outlier — he’s not even sure if there’s a gas station for sale in the area — but one he believes could spark a great deal of dialogue, and points out it’s been done before. In 1979, Mayor Harry W. Kelley and Town Council leased a gas station in town next to Jolly Roger Amusement Park, where they pumped fuel for customers. It was an effort to help allay gas-shortage woes, and it was a publicity bonanza. There’s no shortage of gas currently but the basic motivation is the same, according to

Gas giveway planned by Ottawa church

Beginning of Story Content

An Ottawa evangelical church will be manning the pumps at a local Pioneer gas station next weekend, with plans to give away $10,000 worth of free fuel.

The Dominion Outreach Centre in Gloucester says it wants to offer people in the community up to $50 worth of gasoline for their vehicle without charge, and says it hopes the act will encourage other churches and organizations to do the same.

“We can afford to give away $10,000 worth of gas. That’s $50 a vehicle,” pastor Joe Mebrahtu told CBC News Friday.

“I’m hoping it’s going to be a party. We just want to create a festive environment.”

No religious message

Volunteers will begin filling up the first of at least 200 tanks starting at 10 a.m. on June 11, as well as offering coffee and a windshield wipe. A barbecue is also planned.

There is no ulterior motive involved, Mebrahtu stressed. “There won’t be a religious message,” he said, adding the gesture is more about community outreach and helping residents to meet their tangible needs.

Pastor Joe Mebrahtu says the free gas is being offered to believers and non-believers alike, and is meant to be a community outreach gesture.

If visitors do want prayer, they’re more than welcome, he said.

Asked whether the “Great Gas Giveaway” at the Pioneer station on the corner of Ogilvie and Blair Place was a promotional or marketing move, Mebrahtu said the day wasn’t about making a pitch for new members.

Message of generosity

“The last thing we want to do is come out as kind of corporation. We don’t promote the gospel, the gospel is there for somebody who wants to receive it,” he said.

Mebrahtu said he hoped that other organizations and groups in the city would take note of the feel-good gesture and follow suit.

“Whatever the need

Pine Vista Resort Launches Free Gas Card Incentive for New Cottage Rental Bookings

Pine Vista Resort, a 4 star cottage resort on prestigious Stoney Lake in the Kawartha Lakes tourist region, is helping customers fight the high cost of fuel by offering free gas cards with every new resort booking made with the Ontario resort before June 30th.

Lakefield, Ontario (PRWEB) May 27, 2011

Pine Vista Resort (http://www.pinevista.com), a well-known Ontario cottage resort in the Kawartha Lake tourist region, located approximately 1 ½ hours from the greater Toronto area, announces the launch of a new resort promotion. Effective immediately, Pine Vista will be giving away free gas cards with every new cottage rental booking made before June 25, 2011. By offering its customers the added incentive of receiving a free gas card for booking a cottage resort getaway, Pine Vista Resort hopes to offset any reluctance potential resort guests might have to travel out of town, due to the high cost of gasoline

“By giving away free gas cards, Pine Vista Resort is doing its part in fighting back against high gas prices,” states Pine Vista Resort co-owner, Bonnie Hamilton. “The Free gas card is available with any new booking made before June 25, 2011, for resort stays from now up until November 30, 2011. For resort vacations of one week or longer, we will include a $50.00 gas card, and for shorter stays, we will be offering a $35.00 gas card. The free gas cards will be presented at check in. It is our hope that customers will take advantage of this offer. The Kawartha Lakes region is one of the closest Ontario tourist destinations to Toronto and the GTA. Our close proximity to this large population base, combined with our free gas card incentive, makes driving to our Stoney Lake resort extremely affordable, despite the high cost of fuel,” says
