Hot 103.9 Gives More Than 100 People Free Gas

Columbia, SC (WLTX) – Midlands radio station Hot 103.9, WHXT-FM, gave more than $2,000 in gas money Wednesday afternoon at a Garners Ferry Road gas station.

Hundreds lined up to get some relief at the pump, but only 103 drivers made the cut. Cars stretched down Garners Ferry Road and wrapped around buildings, causing Richland County deputies to direct traffic.

“It is so wonderful that they are doing this. I mean, the gas has been outrageously high, and I really thank God for this, because I am definitely on ‘Empty,’” says Maryan Brown.

Cece Costigan says, “I was broke, didn’t know how I was going to get home and I got some gas. Hey!”

While gas prices went up, Hot 103.9 gave drivers each $20 worth of gas.

“Honey, that $20 helped me, okay? Because I am not balling alright,” says Nicole Brown.

Even children were excited about their parents recieving free gas.

“Free gas, more riding,” says Asia Jones.

Cynia Jones says, “It feels so good right now. We ain’t gotta spend no money. I just, oh my God. I’m so happy right now, I cant stop smiling.”

It only took 45 minutes to fill up all 103 cars.

Center for the Environment

SALISBURY — The Center for the Environment’s Campaign for Clean Air staff offered a free gas cap check to Schneider Electric employees June 21 while participating in the company’s third annual wellness fair.

Only two of 42 vehicles tested — 3.7 percent — were found to be leaking emissions through gas caps and received free replacements.

Campaign Intern Kacey Hoover said there are a lot of misconceptions about gas cap leaks. One is that the “Check Engine” light will come on if emissions are leaking from the gas cap, but that’s not always the case.

The “Check Engine” light wasn’t on in one of the vehicles that failed the gas cap check, Hoover said, and the other vehicle that failed, a 1978 model, didn’t even have an indicator. Leaking gas caps contribute to air pollution and waste fuel. One leaking cap releases about 200 pounds of evaporative emissions a year — equal to about 30 gallons of fuel.

June McDowell, another Campaign intern, and volunteer Dawn Grant helped Hoover with the gas cap check. Shelia Armstrong, outreach coordinator for the Campaign for Clean Air, helped man the tent outside for gas cap checks and the information booth inside at the wellness fair. The replacement caps and fuel cap tester systems and adapters were purchased with Campaign for Clean Air funds.

MichiganBlood[1].JPG

Want free gasoline? Give blood.

Michigan Blood announced a new campaign to offer individuals who attempt to donate blood at one of it’s main donors centers — today through Thursday — a free $5 gas card and a chance to win $1,000 in free gas from Meijer.

Main donor centers in the Great Lakes Bay region are located at:

  • 1771 Tittabawassee Road in Kochville Township from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. today through Thursday.
  • 1017 N. Johnson Street in Bay City from noon until 7 p.m. Wednesday.
  • 4005 Orchard Drive in Midland from noon until 7 p.m. today.

Donors are encouraged to make an appointment by calling 1-866-MI-BLOOD or visiting miblood.org. Walk-ins are welcome.

Michigan Blood is an independent, nonprofit blood bank that provides blood for 30 hospitals across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and collects more than 110,000 pints of blood each year at nine permanent donation sites and more than 3,700 mobile blood drives statewide.

Related services available from Michigan Blood include a blood stem cell (marrow) program, therapeutic apheresis, DNA tissue-typing, transfusion medicine consultations, and a cord blood bank.

Michigan Blood is a member of America’s Blood Centers, a network of community blood banks spanning North America that together provide half the United State’s blood supply.

Free gas idea generated a public relations bonanza

It’s time to look at the positive public relations benefits Ocean City has achieved in the past eight months from public discussion of a free-gas promotion.

“Ocean City, Md.” is all over the Internet, on USA Today and Yahoo!, in newspapers in Florida, Arizona, Ireland, the U.K. and India; in at least 37 newspapers in Maryland; in TV coverage and many radio features and interviews; and now on Facebook.

What is this promotion that has generated so much PR and been cited as “brilliant?”

Advertising is paying for comments about yourself — Ocean City telling everyone how great Ocean City is. All resorts do this. Ocean City spends at least $3 million for this every year.

Promotion is getting others to say how great Ocean City is, generally for little and sometimes no cost.

Thus, a little cost, ingenuity and perfect timing has the potential to produce a result as much or more impactful than millions of advertising dollars.

This allows Ocean City to capitalize on a major news item on everyone’s mind. It takes a term people struggle with, adding a little fantasy and reality to make it a fantastic reality they can’t forget. It’s a win-win for Ocean City.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Maryland, along the East Coast, all over the country and now in Europe and Asia have seen and know about Ocean City, all because of “free gas in Ocean City.”

These PR benefits are potentially worth millions and already exceeding expectations. Ocean City is truly living in exciting times.

Bhopal gas victim’s children protest in New Delhi

Calcutta News.Net
Monday 27th June, 2011 (IANS)

About a hundred children of the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy demonstrated in front of the Prime Minister’s Office Monday demanding medical care, rehabilitation and a poison-free environment, said an NGO.

Wearing signs with words like ‘Justice’ and ‘Izzat (dignity)’, members of the Bhopal-based Children Against Dow-Carbide held a banner with their demands in front of the North Block office.

The Union Carbide disaster, in which poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the plant on the night of Dec 2-3, 1984, killed 3,000 people instantly and 25,000 over the years. It also affected 100,000 people that night and estimates are that more than 500,000 continue to suffer from ill effects of the gas till date.

A press communique issued by the protest holding NGO said that it was the fourth time children were trying to draw the attention of the prime minister towards governmental inaction on environmental and health rehabilitation schemes in Bhopal.

‘Since 2006, we have sought help from Dr. Manmohan Singh for the children of Bhopal who are still denied medical care and rehabilitation and who are still forced to drink poisoned water.’ said Safreen Khan one of the founders of Children Against Dow Carbide.

Cheap, clean-burning natural gas is fast becoming many commercial fleets’ favorite fuel. Thanks to new laws and federal regulations mandating alternative-fuel vehicles, even more companies could embrace this relatively abundant, domestically produced alternative to oil. If and when they do, one company stands poised to profit.

Fuel Systems Solutions (Nasdaq: FSYS  ) builds infrastructure and converts gasoline-powered vehicles to run on natural gas, and it’s working hard to corner the fleet market. Through multiple acquisitions, the company has amassed an impressive portfolio of the EPA certificates required to convert vehicles from oil-based fuels to gas. It’s certified to convert two of the most popular fleet vehicles, Chevy’s 2011 Malibu and Impala, along with the 2011 Ford (NYSE: F  ) Transit Connect, a popular choice for many cities’ new taxicabs.

As it expands, Fuel Systems Solutions also boasts an impressive customer list. The company recently teamed up with General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) to manufacture CNG vans for ATT’s (NYSE: T  ) corporate fleet. The communications giant could be a major customer for years to come, since it plans to deploy 15,000
