Explosion rocks Iranian gas line to Turkey

TEHRAN, July 29 (UPI) — Natural gas supplies from Iran to Turkey were disrupted when an explosion struck a natural gas pipeline connecting the countries, Iranian officials said.

A blast early Friday struck a natural gas pipeline near Maku, which is near the Iranian-Turkish border, cutting gas supplies, unnamed officials told Iran’s semiofficial Mehr news agency.

The report indicated that responders were able to get the blaze under control and extract excess gas from a broken pipeline section.

Tehran said it sent technicians to the site to restore the flow of natural gas to Turkey.

Iran has been fighting Kurdish militants with the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan, or PJAK, for several weeks along the shared border with Iraq. Turkey is battling fighters with the separatist Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

Though pipelines have been targeted by militants in the past, there were no statements of responsibility or cause given for the explosion.

Iran exports around 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

BALTIMORE – Faith E. Wachter doesn’t normally spend as much as $17 on shampoo in a single shopping trip. But by stocking up on hair care products recently, the Ellicott City, Md., resident saved more than $4 on gasoline for her car – and just in time for a drive to the beach.

As they look for ways to spend less on fuel, more shoppers are headed to the supermarket.

Several chains are rewarding loyal customers with points they can redeem for discounts at the pump. And with the cost of a gallon of gas up a dollar from last summer, consumers say they are comparing the different programs – and, in some cases, shopping accordingly.

“It’s like buying a winning lottery ticket,” J.D. Taylor said as he filled up at the Safeway gas station in Catonsville, Md.

“How can you lose?” the Woodlawn, Md., man asked. “The card is free.”

Consumer advocates caution against the potential pitfalls of such programs. It’s true, they say, that customers might save money, as long as they don’t let the lure of discounts change their regular shopping habits.

But because it costs retailers money to offer and promote such discounts, they say, prices in general might be lower if they didn’t exist in the first place.

“I don’t think consumers benefit by encouraging these programs,” said Joseph Ganem, a physicist at Loyola University Maryland who has written a book on how consumers are deceived by numbers.

“These companies are paying a lot to implement them,” Ganem said. “You’re paying for that.”

The supermarket programs are pretty similar: For every dollar

Tuesday’s ETF to Watch: DJ U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration And Production ETF

Although the global economy remains shaky to say the least, commodity prices have been soaring as worries over the U.S. dollar continue to dominate the market. Oil prices have held up especially well considering the possibility of a reduction in demand in the foreseeable future and are currently trading around the triple-digit mark. This strength in energy prices has helped to boost earnings for a variety of firms tied to the oil and gas industries, be it companies that engage in drilling or exploration of these resources. In fact, before the bell yesterday, Baker Hughes, a major driller of energy resources, reported a massive earnings increase as profits at the company nearly tripled from one year ago. This strength in the corporate side of the energy story has put pressure on a variety of other names in the field as well, many of which are reporting earnings later on in the week. One such company is Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY  ) , which looks to give its earnings report before the bell today.

Thanks to these trends in the marketplace, many analysts are predicting a huge pop in the company’s earnings and revenues from the year-ago period. The consensus estimate calls for EPS of $2.19 a share on revenues of $5.79 billion, a nearly 67% increase in profits from the year-ago period in which the company reported earnings of $1.31 a share on sales of $4.76 billion. These figures also suggest that analysts are looking for the overall profit margin of the company to accelerate as well, expecting the company to become far more efficient at turning sales into profits than it was just one year ago.

Thanks to this key earnings report, investors should look for
