SF gas station’s fuel giveaway on Spare the Air Day prompts criticism

On a hot, smoggy day in which Bay Area commuters were urged to renounce their cars for more carbon-friendly transit options, some 240 motorists each guzzled up to 15 gallons of free fuel as part of a giveaway event at an Outer Mission district gas station.

Despite Wednesday being a regional Spare the Air Day, a Shell gas station at 3550 Mission St. distributed free gas from 7 to 9 a.m. Station Manager Hugo Cerna said the giveaway was scheduled “quite some time ago.”

“I don’t think anyone at Shell knew this was a Spare the Air Day,” said Cerna, who added that he had no input on the decision. The event was designed to bring attention to a separate promotion that Shell and Lucky supermarkets have embarked upon, Cerna said.

Shell spokeswoman Katie Floyd said Wednesday’s gas giveaway was part of a nationwide event planned weeks in advance.

“We took great strides to ensure that our gasoline giveaways all over the country today were safe for motorists and the general public,” Floyd said.

Cerna said the early-morning crowd at the station was larger than normal, but not overwhelmingly so, since Shell did little to promote the giveaway.

“It was pretty busy,” he said, “but nothing too crazy.”

Still, officials at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the agency that issues Spare the Air Days, seemed none too pleased about the gas giveaway.

“We really like to discourage people from driving alone on a Spare the Air Day,” air district spokesman Aaron Richardson said. “So having a free gas event is something we’d rather not have gas station do.”

The agency issues Spare the Air warnings on hot, sunny days when winds levels are lower than normal. Such conditions allow smog levels to rise higher than usual, and to help prevent air quality from becoming dangerous, commuters are

Free gas for buying groceries

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Gas prices have been falling lately with an average price of $3.30 a gallon, but filling up the tank is still taking a big chunk out of driver’s budgets.

“I actually started looking at coupons and sales ads when I was in college,” said Ann Peterson.

A husband and three children later, Ann Petersen has mastered the craft of shopping for less.

“I save on average 40-60% on my grocery bill,” Peterson said.

It’s allowed her to stockpile necessities when they’re at their cheapest, but Ann found another way to make sales work for her.

“Martin’s continued the program Ukrop’s had called fuel perks,” Ann said. “For every $100 that you spend, you automatically get 10 cents off per gallon.”

This helps at the gas pump, but there are bigger savings to be had.

“They offer bonus deals where if you buy so many items in one category, you get an additional 20 cents off per gallon,” Ann said.

Every Monday, Ann sits down with her Martin’s circular to find the best deals. She matches available coupons and shares the best discounts on her blog, “Ann’s Crazy World.”

“20 cents off per gallon equals $4,” said Ann.

Her best scenario to date came from barbecue sauce. Each bottle was $1.00. Buy 7, and get 20 cents off the gas. But there was an unadvertised bonus.

“Every 2 bottles of barbecue sauce you bought, you got a catalina coupon for $2.50 off your next order,” said Ann. “For every 2 bottles I was buying, I was coming ahead 50 cents.”

Ann bought more than 40 bottles and used the catalinas to run another fuel perks deal on baby food. Both deals saved her more than $3 per gallon. She finds a way to fill her tank for free at least once a month.

Free Gas Giveaway Causes Gridlock In Miami

MIAMI (CBS4) – Getting a free ride took on new meaning in Miami Wednesday morning when a Shell gas station gave away free gas to hundreds of drivers.

“I think it’s great,” said one happy customer. “It’s good, thank you so much,” exclaimed another.

The gas was being pumped out for free from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. at the Shell station located on SW 8th Street and 106th Avenue.

Drivers who got in line in time received up to 15 gallons of regular-grade Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasoline.

The location of the free gas giveaway wasn’t revealed until an hour before the promotion started. In a flash, a line of cars appeared to take part in the fuel free-for-all.

“I told my teenage daughter, we’ve got to go get gas,” laughed Lilly Rodriguez.

The wait was between 15 and 45 minutes. Drivers said it was more than worth it.

“It’s going to take me to work for the whole week,” said Alan Padina.

“I only waited about 15 minutes, not bad at all. I’m going home to get another car, said a very happy Gary Webb who did return with a second car.

Bolivian police free Amazon protest marchers

Bolivian President Evo Morales has announced the suspension of a proposed Amazon highway that had sparked protests by indigenous activists who say it would despoil a nature preserve.

The protest and a police move to break up the demonstration and detain hundreds of participants had led to the resignation of Defense Minister Cecilia Chacon. Mobs of local residents on Monday blocked roads and an airport runway to prevent authorities from taking the detainees away.

In a brief televised address, Morales announced Monday night that he had suspended plans for the highway, and would let Bolivia’s states decide on whether to proceed with the Brazil-funded project.
