Electric vehicle network planned to allow gas-free travel

CALHOUN, Ga. — A regional electric car group plans a network of chargers that would run up Interstates 75 and 59 to allow gas-free travel from Atlanta, Birmingham and Chattanooga.

A coalition of Clean Cities groups in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina released details of a plan to link charging stations in the three states along interstate corridors during a Northwest Georgia Regional Commission meeting last week.

A station or stations along I-75 would allow Atlanta drivers to reach stations already developed in Chattanooga and other Tennessee locations, according to Don Francis, executive director of Clean Cities Atlanta.

“We have really one hole to plug” along I-75 in the network between Atlanta and several Tennessee cities.

Most electric cars, including the Nissan Leaf and forthcoming offerings from Ford and Mitsubishi, can travel between 75 and 100 miles on a single charge. That puts a trip from Atlanta to Chattanooga out of reach, but charging stations — which can juice up a battery in 20 minutes — would make the trip possible.

Francis said the group plans to explore the idea of placing charging stations at highway rest areas, including sites in Gordon County, Ga., and DeKalb County, Ala. Beyond that, they hope to partner with chain restaurants, entertainment venues, malls and other attractions to build more stations.

“You don’t want to put this stuff in the wrong place,” Francis said. “You want to put this where people say they are going to use it.”

The effort, called the Southeast Regional EV Readiness Planning Program, secured a grant and contract to study the routes in September, and the group has one year to complete user surveys and finalize plans.

In addition to I-75 and I-59, the current design calls for

Argentina Orders Oil, Gas, Mining Firms To Repatriate Export Sales

-Argentina orders oil, gas and mining companies to repatriate export proceeds immediately

-Mining industry probably most affected by the presidential decree

-Decree is most recent attempt by Kirchner administration to staunch capital flight

(Updates throughout with background)

BUENOS AIRES -(Dow Jones)- Argentina on Wednesday ordered oil, gas and mining companies to repatriate all of the proceeds from their export sales as the administration of President Cristina Kirchner struggles to staunch capital flight.

Argentines and foreigners pulled $9.8 billion out of the country in the first half of the year alone by one measure of capital flight tracked by the central bank. Those outflows are widely believed to have accelerated in the third quarter as investors became increasingly worried about Kirchner’s high-growth, high-inflation economic policies.

A presidential decree published Wednesday in the Official Bulletin abolished regulations that allowed oil and gas companies to freely dispose of up to 70% of their export revenues. Mining companies, which up until now were largely free of foreign-exchange restrictions, will also have to repatriate all of their export proceeds.

The new foreign-exchange rules aim to give “equal treatment to all productive activities,” according to the decree, which is effective immediately.

Exports of copper, precious metals, oil, natural gas, and related products totaled about $7.7 billion in the first nine months of the year, according to national statistics agency, Indec.

Nomura Securities said in a note the measure could represent between $3 billion and $4 billion through the end of the year, allowing the Central Bank of Argentina to reduce the pressure on its international reserves.

The impact on oil and gas companies could be limited as Argentina has applied onerous taxes

Gas thieves target large vehicles in Murray, Spanish Fork

SPANISH FORK — Law enforcement officers in Spanish Fork are asking for the public’s help in locating the people responsible for a string of gas thefts.

About a dozen vehicles have been targeted in city within the last 10 days — with the largest concentration being in the area east of Main Street and north of 400 North, Spanish Fork Police Lt. Carl Johnston said. The thefts have focused on large vehicles with poly plastic gas tanks, as opposed to those with steel tanks.

“They’re using a drill bit to create not only a hole for the gas to drain out, but also a vent hole, so, they’re actually drilling two holes so the gas will flow faster,” Johnston said.

Police said the holes, which are usually les than an inch in diameter, damage the tanks at a great expense to the vehicle owners.

“The thing that’s bad about the situation we’re having is the gasoline is a minor cost, generally less than $50, but a new poly tank for those trucks they’re getting under is costing $400 or $500,” Johnston said.

The thefts are also messy, often allowing gas to spill out and run onto the driveways, sidewalks and roads.

“It’s kind of a dangerous thing they’re doing,” Johnston said. “Somebody could come by and throw a cigarette butt, that type of thing, and light the house and the car on fire, possibly.”

Police are asking that the citizens of Spanish Fork keep an ear and an eye out for potential thieves. They even said to be aware of children who may be coming home with gas tanks.

“We would encourage the citizenry to police their own streets,” Johnston said.

Those with questions or information involving the thefts are asked to call 801-804-4700. Those who wish to remain anonymous will be allowed to do so.

      Maui leak: Vector response (3:20)

People cutting down on gas use at home means more businesses can
now use their supply while Fonterra is using a back-up gas line to
enable it to process some milk from farmers.

Crews are working to fix a crack discovered on a section of the
Maui pipeline running through a farm near White Cliffs about 20km
north of New Plymouth but warn it may not be repaired until the
weekend at the earliest.

The outage is affecting thousands of commercial customers in the
upper North Island who have been told to stop using gas.

At a press conference this morning the CEO of gas distribution
company Vector said a smaller than usual amount of gas is being
used by homes which has freed up more fuel for small businesses
like high street shops and cafes.

“But it’s really important they only turn on gas and use gas
after they’ve been contacted by their retailers,” he said.

The acting Energy and Resources Minister, Hekia Parata, urged
residential users to remain conservative with their use of gas.

“There were savings overnight that means quarter of million home
gas users have disciplined their use of gas,” she told TV ONE’s
Breakfast.

“The more we get those savings the more spare capacity we have
to get businesses back on the network.”

Gas supply has also been restored to essential services
including hospitals, bakeries and most of the dairy factories which
had been
